Description	Exponential sums arise various context in algebraic and analytic number theory. In this talk, we explain how they may appear when we study prehomogeneous vector spaces. We then outline a new method for evaluating them explicitly. As an application, we show that there are `many' quartic field discriminants with at most eight prime factors. This is a joint work with Frank Thorne.
