This talk provides classification and symmetry results for certain local and nonlocal elliptic PDEs with power type nonlinearities. We start with a brief background on standard methods and ideas de- veloped over the past couple of decades. Then we present some new developments as well as new challenges. Monotonicity formulas, Liou- ville theorems and one-dimensional symmetry properties stand as our main focus. This talk covers a series of joint work with Nassif Ghous- soub, Juncheng Wei and Yannick Sire.
