What if we made our agricultural crops less lazy? : a root exudates story Pollet, Sasha

Description

Sasha Pollet was a semi-finalist in the 2025 UBC Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition. Sasha presented their research, “What if we made our agricultural crops less crazy? A root exudates story.” This research explores how reducing phosphorus fertilizer by 40% can boost root activity and nutrient foraging in crops while maintaining yields, mimicking natural nutrient extraction strategies seen in wilderness environments. The study also highlights how soil type influences nutrient release, suggesting potential for more sustainable agricultural practices with reduced fertilizer reliance. Sasha Pollet is completing their PhD in Soil Science in the Faculty of Science under the supervision of Dr. JT Cornelis.
