Currencies of Belonging : a Spatial Union of Cinema and Currency on Lonsdale Kazemeini, Sahar

Abstract

North Vancouver becomes a canvas for the unexpected union of cinema and currency. Historically marked by the disappearance of local cinemas, Lonsdale Street today hosts an unusual concentration of money service businesses, a reflection of the area’s growing population of newcomers and their global ties. Taking cues from Rube Goldberg’s non-linear world, this project re-imagines such peculiar density, transforming the street into a site of cultural exploration and curiosity. Rather than proposing monumental interventions, it introduces a series of small architectural follies, modest in size but rich in experience. Each folly entangles rituals of financial exchange and cinematic gathering, crafting spaces that unfold through thresholds, ramps, stairs, and processions.
