From Quakes to Quarters : Resilient Landscapes for Seismic Challenges Undeyoglu, Cansu
Abstract
The February 6th Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes devastated Turkey and Syria, claiming
51,000 lives and destroying 160,000 buildings. With 300-kilometer fracture lines, 7.8 Mw.
and 7.5 Mw. quakes left 180,000 in container homes. Hatay, a southern Turkish city, faced
significant damage, with 80% of remaining buildings set for demolition. Months later, people
still live in tents and public parks, facing uncertainty. This study explores earthquake-resilient
landscape design, focusing on the relationship between public space, drinking water,
food, and housing crises, addressing how the landscape can become a refuge in Hatay.
The graduate project delves into the recovery process, meeting earthquake victims’ needs,
and restoring the relationship with the Asi River.
