Undocumented spaces : the hidden realities of a novice teacher Payne, Emily
Abstract
This paper describes my experiences as a beginning teacher, locating them in literature on teacher burnout and demoralization. I categorize my experiences as course churning, school environments that are toxic, and unrealistic expectations of perfection. I contrast my experiences with the literature, which appears to characterize burnout and demoralization as an individual problem rather than a systemic problem, and I make recommendations for enhancing the professional development of a beginning teacher.
