How to survive a zombie apocalypse : using popular culture in youth transitional courses Bazell, Christina
Abstract
This paper examines how popular culture can been used to increase student engagement with transitional curriculum used by Career Practitioners and in home economics and career and life management programs. Popular culture is defined as a set of dynamic representations of everyday life that is accepted by a collective social group and public domain ((Browne, 1994; Delaney, 2007; Gilman, 2015; O’Brien & Szenan, 2004). The intention of this paper is to explore the use of popular culture in transition education as a way for students to engage with the challenging subject matter of career planning and independent living. It includes a literature review on the use of popular culture in education and a handbook for teachers, which is a compilation of teaching activities and resources for teachers that utilize popular culture references including the zombie apocalypse, as seen in The Walking Dead.
