Bakan is an internationally renowned legal scholar and commentator. He has worked on landmark legal cases and government policy. A former Rhodes Scholar and law clerk to Chief Justice Brian Dickson of the Supreme Court of Canada, Bakan has been a recipient of a UBC Killam Research Prize, and was named British Columbia’s Academic of the Year in 2004. His scholarly works include The New Corporation: How ‘Good’ Corporations are Bad for Democracy (2020); Childhood Under Siege: How Big Business Targets Children (2011); his critically acclaimed international hit, The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power (2004) that was published in over 20 languages and inspired the award winning documentary film, The Corporation; and Just Words: Constitutional Rights and Social Wrongs (1997).
