Open Collections Content Advisory
Last reviewed: [2025-07-07]
The University of British Columbia Library works to describe materials in Open Collections in alignment with our values of openness, belonging, connection and curiosity. Due to the nature of some digitized materials and international metadata standards, users of Open Collections may encounter inaccurate, offensive, and/or outdated representations and/or terminology, including language and depictions that are racist, sexists, ableist, homophobic, and otherwise offensive or discriminatory.
Additionally, content and descriptions reflect the time they were created and the views of their creators. While we preserve archival information to maintain the integrity of the historical record, we also recognize the need for ongoing review and assessment of contemporary materials to ensure they align with evolving anti-racism, decolonization, and equity practices.
We are committed to reviewing, assessing, and adjusting descriptions to better align with these principles. If you encounter materials or metadata of concern or if you have further questions, we encourage you to reach out to us by email or by using the feedback button on any Open Collections page.
